Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Football Compass.
- Accumulator
- A single bet that links multiple selections; all must win for the bet to pay out, and winnings roll over from one selection to the next.
- Asian Handicap
- A two-way handicap that eliminates the draw outcome and adjusts the line to give each team a +/- goal advantage.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money a bettor sets aside for placing bets, separate from everyday finances.
- Both Teams to Score
- A wager on whether each side will score at least one goal during the match.
- Cash Out
- A feature allowing bettors to settle a bet before the event ends, either to secure a profit or limit a loss.
- Deposit Bonus
- A matched percentage of a bettor’s deposit offered as extra betting credit, often subject to rollover requirements.
- Double Chance
- A bet that covers two of the three possible match outcomes (home win/draw, away win/draw, or either side win) in one wager.
- Draw No Bet
- A bet where you pick a team to win; if the match ends in a draw, the stake is refunded.
- Fade
- To bet against a popular pick or a widely backed team, often used when the public is heavily supporting one side.
- First Goal Scorer
- A bet on which player will score the opening goal of the match.
- Free Bet
- A promotional credit given by a sportsbook that can be used to place a bet; any winnings are usually returned without the stake.
- Hedge
- Placing a bet on the opposite side of an existing wager to reduce risk or lock in a guaranteed profit.
- Juice
- The commission that a sportsbook charges for taking a bet, typically built into the odds.
- Line Movement
- Changes in the odds or point spread over time, reflecting betting flow and new information.
- Live Betting
- Betting on a match while it is in progress, with odds that update in real time as the game unfolds.
- Moneyline
- A bet that picks the winner of a match without any point spread; the odds reflect the straight-up win probability.
- Odds
- The probability of an outcome expressed as a number, determining how much a winning bet pays.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether the total number of goals in a match will be higher (over) or lower (under) than a set line.
- Parlay
- Similar to an accumulator, a parlay combines two or more bets into one, with the payout depending on every selection winning.
- Payout
- The total amount returned to the bettor after a winning bet, including the original stake plus profit.
- Point Spread
- A handicap given to the underdog and an advantage to the favorite to make both sides equally attractive for betting.
- Responsible Gambling
- Practices and resources aimed at ensuring betting remains safe, such as setting deposit limits and seeking help for problem gambling.
- Rollover Requirement
- The number of times a bonus or free bet must be wagered before it can be withdrawn as cash.
- Stake
- The amount of money wagered on a single bet or a specific selection.
- Steam
- A rapid shift in odds or line caused by heavy betting action on one side of a market.
